Google’s operating system for Google’s mobile devices, Android, is the most used on the planet, covering almost 85% of the mobile audience worldwide.

Since Android Oreo was introduced, we have been quite expectant to know what it would be and the characteristics that the new software presented by the company would have. Much had been speculated about this new software, what will be its name? With what new features will surprise us from Google?

  2. Do you want to try Android P already?

At the moment something we already knew was that it would be adapted to phone models with the same notch as the latest model released by Apple: the iPhone X, and that would also include security measures to protect the privacy of users, such as preventing applications that they are active in a second plane that access the microphone or the camera of the device.

Now it is something official, and although we know that Android P is in development there is a preview dedicated to the developers can see it physically before the giant throws it definitively to the market, a few hours ago it is something official and Android announced Android P. Want to know its main features?

Features of Android P, everything you need to know

New

Although following the line of desserts and sweets to which we were used in Android to name their versions of Android (Oreo, Marshmallow, Nougat …) for now we know the next thing Android will bring us as Android P. But what we do know is definitely some of the most remarkable features of the new Android.

The ‘notch’ is here to stay, but it’s not as bad as it seems

Believe me, if I tell you that I am one of the biggest detractors of the fashion of the happy ‘notch’. Even so, the inclusion of support for this format on Android P is not, at all, bad news.

That the possibility of adding a virtual notch in the system settings has been incorporated does not mean that this option will be in the definitive version of Android P. It is a method that serves developers – again, remember that we are before a preview for developers- to create their applications and adapt them to the phones of those manufacturers that have decided to join this -aspire- fashion.

Android P Features 1

And no, it does not mean that each and every one of the new Android smartphones, including the Pixel 3, will incorporate a ‘notch’. The only thing that is achieved with this addition is to maintain homogeneity between the interface of all the mobile phones that are going to incorporate it and to avoid that each manufacturer decides to adapt to this format in its own way.

Quick adjustments completely redesigned

One of the most striking visual changes of the new version of Android, we find in the quick settings. When deploying the panel, we will quickly realize that everything has changed: the quick settings are now inside circular icons, and the corners of the panel that houses them have also been rounded.

This change is not only intended to improve the visibility of quick adjustments, but one of the objectives of the redesign is to further mark the distinction between the settings panel and notifications.

Of course, so many changes have also negatively affected certain aspects. For example, it is now not possible to access the system settings from the panel’s direct access through a single slide on the bar, but the entire panel will have to be displayed, with two slides, to find the adjustment button.

On the other hand, while inversions such as Android OR the settings panel was divided into several pages in horizontal scroll format, Android P opts for the vertical list format, with all the settings arranged in a grid with no icon limit.

Better management of notifications (yes, even better)

When it seems that notifications on Android cannot improve anymore, Google comes with a new version and shows us the potential that this aspect of the operating system still has.

One of the most relevant changes in Android P notifications will affect messaging apps. And, from now on, notifications of apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger or Allo, among others, will integrate quick responses to answer directly from the notification itself, the possibility of attaching images or stickers without entering the app, and even the thread of the entire conversation will be displayed, all directly in the notifications panel.

Now you can manually choose when to rotate the screen

Android P is also full of small details that make us look forward to this great update of the operating system. One of them, although it may seem silly to the naked eye, is more useful than it seems.

It consists of a button to rotate the screen, which will appear in the virtual navigation bar whenever we change the orientation of the device when the automatic rotation is deactivated. In this way, when viewing a video or browsing a web page, and wanting to do it in landscape mode, it will not be necessary to go to the quick settings panel to activate autorotation.

New volume manager

The volume control menu, that big forgotten. Google has finally decided, several years later, to completely renew the way in which the volume of the system is controlled in Android P.

Now, a slider allows us to change the multimedia volume, while a button located at the bottom, is used to switch between the different warning modes: silence, vibration and sound.

A notable change in the software

The software adapts to the upper notch of the “iPhone X type” screen to house the camera and sensors. The reason why is very clear: It is expected that brands with Android operating systems such as Huawei or LG launch their phones imitating the popular notch. In fact, Zenfone 5 of Asus will also land with the notch.

A higher battery time

The new Android software will extend the life of our phone’s battery.

Greater security

Hackers cannot access the camera and audio through applications that are working in the background.

Improved notification system

It includes intelligent answers that we can send from the notification screen of our Android phone, as well as access previous messages and preview images.

Improvements in the camera

The new Android software includes improvements to the camera and more codecs for images and videos.

Other interesting changes: new animations, capture editor and more

Beyond the rest of the visual changes, Android P also incorporates a new collection of animations in the system, resulting in a faster and smoother experience. In the video, it is possible to see in more detail the new animations incorporated in this version.

As for the “entrails” of the system, we will find interesting developments, such as the support for the HEIC format of images, which allows reducing the size without loss of quality, or support for the HDR VP9 standard.

We will also enjoy advances in terms of security, since from the new version; applications will not be able to access the microphone or the camera while they are in the background, thus preventing users from being spied on without even knowing about it.

With the rise of dual photosystems, it was only a matter of time before Android incorporated a native API to support multiple sensors. In Android P Multi-Camera API is present, which will allow developers to take advantage of dual camera systems of the devices, whatever the method chosen by their respective manufacturers – wide angle, zoom, monochrome…

We do not forget, either, the new built-in screen capture editor “Markup”, which is activated every time we make a capture to allow us to modify it before we can share it.

These are just some of the great changes that are coming on Android P. As I said at the beginning, this is just a first preview of everything we will see over the months, as the next versions for developers appear. There is no doubt that Android 9 will be a great leap for Google’s mobile platform, both in design and functionalities, which, unfortunately, many users will never be able to enjoy in their current devices.
